Hi.

Welcome, here you will find my interests in design, music, creativity, food, art and technology.

The end of an era... 1978. The Linotype farewell.

The end of an era... 1978. The Linotype farewell.

Watching this makes me remember what it was like to work in the old "Paste-up" world of graphic arts. Compared to the people jumping in the industry today I'm what you call a "dinosaur". Its not very common anymore to find people that are 30 and under that know even about the "paste-up" era of printing/design. Let alone the lead type era and its amazing Linotype machine.

Either way, its remains true. All of this technology is so people can create. And none of these advancements make people more creative, its just another way of communicating your idea if you are.

You still have you use your head, eyes, hands and brain to make something out of nothing.

A film created by Carl Schlesinger and David Loeb Weiss documenting the last day of hot metal typesetting at The New York Times. This film shows the entire newspaper production process from hot-metal typesetting to creating stereo moulds to high-speed press operation. At the end of the film, the new typesetting and photographic production process is shown in contrast to the old ways. There are interviews with workers at NYT that are for and against the new technology. In fact, one typesetter is retiring on this final day as he does not want to learn the new process and technology. This is the first time the film has ever been available in HD from the original 16mm master film. See more printing, journalism, and typographic-related films at: www.printingfilms.com
